Being Happy & Grateful in the Here and Now

Last week, I learned something profound: how to be immensely happy & grateful; right here, right now. For someone who is prone to beating themself up for past mistakes or worrying about the future, this was life changing.

Here it is:

Appreciate that, in THIS present moment, you have NO problems.

That is it.

When I heard this, it didn’t seem like much. But then, it occurred to me how much it liberated me and set me free.

You see, at any given time, I feel like I have so many problems.. And yet, just as easily, I have none at all.

A second before I heard this sentiment on my audiobook, I had a multitude of ‘problems’ to worry about. Just to name a few: forgiving things people did out of genuinely malicious intent. Letting go of deep regret, doubt and resentment. My ongoing job search for a meaningful, ethical part-time job that doesn’t require me to compromise my values or sacrifice my soul. Saving for this year and next year’s travel plans. Going to the gym. People I had to email. Things I had to do.

Do you see what all these things have in common? They’re all either in the past OR the future. In THAT moment, there were no problems.

Let’s look at the facts.

it was Monday afternoon. I had just come home from my weekly volunteer work. It was a beautiful, warm, sunny day, and at 1pm, I was sitting up in bed, with my favourite jasmine green tea, windows open with a view of the blue sky, my room filled with fresh air, listening to a spiritual enlightenment audiobook.

Not next week, not next month, not even five minutes from now.. What was wrong with THIS moment?

You may feel the same. You may have had problems in the past. You may have problems in the future. But guess what? You likely have none right now. And, as Eckhart Tolle teaches us in The Power of Now, NOW is all we ever truly have.
