Yesterday, I had the honour of capturing lifelong memories of Ryan & Cornelia’s big day. Celebrated at Hedges Estate in Waiuku, the day was filled with endless sunshine, nature, love, and good vibes. From the early morning capturing the bridal party getting ready, to the celebrations, cake, and spontaneous mini-photoshoots that followed, the wedding was a truly magical day for all who attended. I absolutely loved capturing the warm smiles and radiant joy of the bride & groom along with their dear family and friends. Congratulations, Ryan & Cornelia! It was an honour to capture this special day for you to look back on for years to come.

Yesterday was a very special day for Amrita, who graduated with her Bachelor of Education! I had the honour of capturing the occasion, surrounded by Amrita’s family and friends and filled with much joy, love and laughter. From post-ceremony photos at Aotea Square to Amrita’s home, we were blessed with a sun-filled day and smiles all around. Congratulations on your graduation, Amrita!

1. I’ve been watching Annie Tarasova’s Youtube channel for what feels like forever, since I first discovered her video on the meaning of crystals and their use in technology today. Since then, I’ve watched all her videos minus the ones about being vegan. I’ve learnt and reflected so much on intuition, minimalism, synchronicity, the moon, meditation, happiness and so much more.. Plus how truly relevant they are to the world today! Whether you believe in it or not, spirituality is interconnected and manifested into real life in powerful ways. 

I’ve always wanted to express my gratitude for all the rich and profound knowledge I’ve learnt from Annie, so I finally purchased some of her amazing art prints from her Etsy shop, DreamyMoons. Inspired by the universe, each piece is absolutely gorgeous and unique. I’m overjoyed with my new posters!

2. After years of being a Les Mills gym member, this week I sold my membership! I will miss the energetic, vibrant atmosphere and weekly BODYPUMP, which helped me become a stronger person physically and mentally, but I feel lighter not paying almost $100 per month for my membership. Plus, I’ve proactively done something beneficial, financially sensible and which adds value to my life. It’s funny what happens when you put things into perspective. With the extra $100 per month, I can literally take out a decent loan to renovate my house!

Now, the possibilities are open. I could save for a treadmill, run on the street/at the park/on the beach, or join CityFitness, who is 24/7, closer to me, and still offers weight + yoga/pilates group fitnesses classes at less than half the price.


3. My beau and I are both lovers of Japanese food, so for date night, I chose the luxurious Tokyo Bay in Takapuna. Right by the beach, the restaurant is ambient, sophisticated and cozy, with an absolutely delicious menu. We loved the miso eggplant, karaage chicken, massive bento boxes and dessert.

4. I saw Lorde live for her Melodrama World Tour! You can read about my experience here.




5. I saw Yumi Zouma live for the second time this year. Following their tour of Europe, the UK, and Japan, my favourite New Zealand band have made their way back home for their Willowbank tour. They played my favourites – Persephone, Depths Pt.1, December, and Alena! 

There’s something about their music; the chill, synth-pop beat and original, authentic lyrics. It was the most incredible feeling dancing to them live again, among the smell of smoke and perfume, and seeing people come together and form a circle during Alena (only ‘real fans’ know why :P). Willowbank + Lorde’s Melodrama = pretty much my 2017 soundtrack.




6. I added a touch of sophistication to my home with these gorgeous new coasters from Cathy Pope, who I discovered from Good magazine. Made with real agate dyed pink with a gold rim, I love having slices of the earth’s DNA on my tabletops! 


7. I got to make good use of my new coasters when I hosted an early Christmas cocktails at my place with my girls from IAG! Plenty of rosé? Tick. Fresh strawberries? Tick. A mini sparkly Christmas tree? Tick. I lit my handmade Raspberry & Vanilla soy candle to set the mood, and all was set. We had so much fun catching up; it makes me wish we were all in the same workplace again! I’m so grateful that months after all going our separate ways, we remain good friends and catch up on the regular.




8. I had such a blast at Wanderlust 108! An ‘all-out celebration of mindful living’, the day consisted of a 5k triathlon (ie. three laps around Western Springs Lake!), over an hour of yoga to find our rhythm, and finally, a meditation session alongside thousands of people. All this plus healthy, delicious food, a little market, and bonus activities such as hooping, essential oils, music, aerial yoga & acroyoga. It was an incredible and worthwhile day to focus on mindfulness, wellness, connecting with nature with each other, and self-love!

This was my favourite song played during yoga. Love the passionate but peaceful energy.

After 6 years, my dear friend Vinka is a doctor. I’ve known her for 8 years, ever since we met at church and I was instantly drawn to her genuine smile and warm, bubbly personality. She has always been the most hardworking, dedicated and faithful person I know, and I couldn’t be more proud!

To celebrate the occasion, we did a photoshoot with her family & friends at the University of Auckland’s Grafton campus, the Auckland Domain Wintergardens and Cornwall Park. Congratulations, Vinka, on your Bachelor of Medicine & Bachelor of Surgery! ❤

My Personal Home Buying Experience

Earlier this year I ticked off one of my bucket list goals: to buy a freehold property. And by tick off, I mean literally – it’s long been written in my precious Bucket List Journal, alongside goals like ‘Go to Japan’, ‘Try anti-gravity yoga’, ‘Go to Tomorrowland’ and ‘Fly a plane’. Needless to say it was a dream come true!

After I shared the news, I got asked more or less the same questions from friends & acquaintances. So today I’d love to share my home buying experience and what it was like, from a personal perspective and as a recount of my personal experience. 

First, KiwiSaver.

I’d read up on how KiwiSaver can help you to buy your first home. I researched the eligibility criteria and house caps, then went ahead and applied for the HomeStart Grant. Since I’d been contributing to KiwiSaver for over three years, I was confident I’d be accepted. So when I received my pre-approval, I was ecstatic!

However, as an individual, it was tough for me to find a house within the Auckland house caps – $600,000 at the time for an existing property or $650,000 for a new build. I was devastated after doing endless searches on TradeMe and never finding any houses that weren’t in the middle of nowhere, and not apartments with bodycorps.

Speaking of TradeMe, I immediately subscribed to their email lists. You can do this by doing a search – simply choose your region, local district, price range and property type. After, you want to click “Save This Search”, then, “Email me every day / every 3 days / every week”. Voila!

I repeated this email subscription process everywhere, including Property Press where you can subscribe to the latest listings in the area you’re looking.

I’d looked for a year or so before I gave up, then started looking again. This time, after months of searching on the Shore, I’d fallen in love with multiple properties. I loved a modern unit in Hillcrest, ignoring the inconvenience of a tandem garage (not a double garage – a tandem, where one car parks in front of the other! Plus there was no rain cover between the garage and house). I also loved this chic little unit in Milford, stylishly furnished with white & grey decor with a nice front and back yard.

On the same day I went to Milford, I almost wasn’t going to stop by another property – one in Glenfield. But very luckily, I did. And it wasn’t a unit this time, it was a freestanding house! 

Being unfurnished, it wasn’t as immediately attractive at first glance, so I wasn’t instantly as in love with it as I was with the previous properties. But it was absolutely wonderful. Two generous, spacious bedrooms with an open lounge & dining room area. A carport that provides cover to the house. A kitchen with a lot of drawers, shelves & cupboards. (I found out later that a previous owner was a cabinet maker.) It also had a front yard and deck, big enough to fit an outdoor dining table and an outdoor lounge set. Plus it was in a fantastic location close to shops, food, bars, doctors, dentists, pharmacies, public transport & more!

By now I still wasn’t 100% sure on which house I’d go for, but it was time to prepare for something else: the mortgage.

The first thing I did was play around on my bank’s mortgage calculators. Your bank will have one, that they may call a home loan calculator. It works out approximately how much you could borrow based on your income, assets, debts & expenses, plus what your repayments could be. I experimented a few times to get a good idea.

I called my bank to ask for an appointment. I asked, “I’d like to find out if I can get a mortgage – if I can, how much I can borrow, and if I can’t, what I need to be able to.” At the time, I also had debt, which I disclosed straight away.

I was taken care of by the friendliest, most down to earth banking advisor. She told me my debt wasn’t actually very much (what a relief). Then she sent me an email, with an application form which I completed and sent back with documents.

The next day she got back to me with good news: a conditional approval! Also called ‘pre-approval’, this allowed me to look at houses within a certain price range!

I remember her saying, “This is great news, I am so excited for you!” It made a huge difference and is clearly something I still remember about one of the most significant purchases of my life.

The amount I could borrow was fairly accurate to the amount the online home loan calculator had told me, give or take a few thousand. I was impressed.

After deciding on the house, it was time to negotiate. My house wasn’t on sale as auction, but had an asking price. I’d cross-referenced different websites to get a rough figure of what the house was worth today, so I knew what was reasonable. That night, the real estate agent went back and forth between me and the vendor while we negotiated the price. I increased my offer twice before I made my third and final offer. The vendor decided to sleep on it, which made that night the most nerve-wracking night ever.

But the next day came and they accepted!

Now it was on a conditional offer and I was to set the conditions. It’s up to you what you choose, and for me it was 1) a building inspection report and 2) a meth test. These were to be done within a certain time frame, which could be 7 days, 10 days or any other time frame agreed between you and the vendor.

Both passed satisfactorily, which meant that it was now UNCONDITIONAL!!!

I went into the bank to get the mortgage set up and finalised. Personally I preferred the certainty and ability to budget with a fixed mortgage rather than floating mortgage, while half fixed, half floating was also an option. A huge bonus is that I’m still allowed to make extra repayments whenever I want, and I have taken advantage of this, incurring costs of only cents. (I’ve been on fixed for 8 months now and it’s working very well.)

The bank’s condition was that we purchased home insurance which was easy peasy as I worked for an insurance company at the time, had insured thousands of homes myself, and got a discount. A lot of people are confused as to what to insure their home for. It’s not how much you bought the house for, but the rebuilding cost – how much you would need to rebuild the house if it was (for example) lost in a fire, excluding land value. You can get a professional quality surveyor or find an online calculator – what you want is not a market valuation but a rebuild cost valuation.

The good news is, the rebuilding cost is usually significantly less than the purchase price – keeping your insurance premiums as low as possible. You also earn discounts for having a securely monitored alarm, having an owner occupied property, and combining with your contents & car insurance (all of which I did, of course)!

The deposit was paid (mine was 10%) while the settlement date had been decided earlier (on the night of negotiation). On the day, the rest of the funds was paid from the bank to my solicitor, which was then paid to the vendor’s solicitor. The official sale & purchase agreement was emailed through, naming me as the owner of the house in North Auckland (so surreal!). What was left: meet up with the real estate agent to get the keys (!!!), and importantly, arrange for power, water & internet.

In the end, I didn’t actually use my KiwiSaver HomeStart Grant because the price was above the house caps, but what I did make good use of was my KiwiSaver First Home Withdrawal. You can withdraw your entire balance minus $1000, and that’s exactly what I did – starting my retirement savings almost all over again, but it was worth it. I mean, I have a place to truly call home!

Now that I’ve gone through the whole home buying process, here are just a few things I wish I’d done earlier:

+ Saved more to borrow less – a pretty obvious but crucial one!

+ Had a higher contribution rate in my KiwiSaver to begin with. I was on the default of 3%, and have now increased it to the maximum of 8% – just in case I decide to emigrate (among other things).

+ Been more patient and practical. It takes time to find The One. Consider all factors and look at the details (ceilings, walls, window sills etc) and bring your family/friends/partner with you to get a second opinion. You might notice different things the other person didn’t see!

+ Considered a buyer’s agent – like a real estate agent, except they work for you and liaise on your behalf – potentially saving you many time consuming drives, phone calls, negotiations and headaches. I may sound rosy about my experience, because I want people reading this to feel optimistic, but I’m very cautious about the honesty & integrity of real estate agents.

Melodrama World Tour

It was an incredible night of colours, lights, fluorescent flowers, stars & astronauts, interpretative dance, confetti, and the most powerful live singing I’ve ever heard. Last night, I attended the first of Lorde’s Melodrama World Tour shows in Auckland!

The energy was unbelievable. Thousands of us filled the arena, excitement and anticipation all around. We danced to music by Wellington band Drax Project – who my partner dubbed ‘Justin Timberlake if he was a reggae band’ – before Lorde burst onto the stage belting Homemade Dynamite!

It was surreal seeing Lorde in front of my own eyes. She was bubbly, charismatic and full of energy, constantly pacing the stage and getting up & personal with fans. I absolutely loved this moment!


Listening to her live gave me crazy nostalgia. Every song she sang from Pure Heroine and Melodrama took me back to a different time in my life.

I fell in love with Ribs when I went out/partied a lot in my last months in Wellington, before quitting my job, moving back to Auckland, and starting a long distance relationship and job search with no plan. Whenever I listen to Ribs, I will always be in my Wellington inner city apartment, Soho, playing silly drinking games with my friends. Nothing else to do, nowhere else to be. Simply young, wild and free; enough to afford our carefree spontaneity.

When she sang Buzzcut Season, I felt like I time travelled – back to my bedroom, the night before I started the job that changed my life forever. I was full of anxiety and excitement. I was fearful but optimistic. I can smell the exact floral, woody and smokey scent of the candle I was holding in my hands, using its warmth and flickering flame to meditate.

I had a great time dancing to Magnets – a particularly epic performance! I also got to witness Lorde’s famously ‘awkward’ dancing, which is simply dramatic in the most awesome way.

She shared stories of how excited she was to be back in her hometown, Auckland, and Takapuna! (She went to Takapuna Grammar!) She shared more stories of childhood, growing up, sneaking into bars with fake IDs, and feeling like you have to be someone else to be accepted, during mellow songs like Liability.

My highlight was definitely dancing to Perfect Places, the soundtrack to much of my life this year – one of change and celebration.

And of course, Green Light  the song about letting go of the past after heartbreak or change and embracing the future. Complete with confetti!

What an unforgettable night. I’m so glad and so proud to have been at the beginning of Lorde’s Melodrama World Tour before she heads off to Australia, Canada and USA!

How To Be Time Affluent + Find More Free Time

Being ‘time affluent’, as coined by psychologists Tim Kasser & Kennon Sheldon, is exactly what it sounds like: being rich and abundant in time. Something we all want to be.

When I used the power of negative thinking to figure out exactly what I wanted in life, I also wrote down something else. A value of mine that I wanted to guide me in all my future life decisions: Time is worth more than money. To me, time as an investment is invaluable and irreplaceable. Think about it: today is the oldest you’ve ever been, and the youngest you’ll ever be again. Money is replaceable, but what about time? Energy? Youth?

Here are some excerpts from books I’ve personally read and found interesting.

The 4 Hour Work Week by Timothy Ferriss

Absolute income is measured using one holy and inalterable variable: the raw and almighty dollar. Jane Doe makes $100,000 per year and is thus twice as rich as John Doe, who makes $50,000 a year.

Relative income uses two variables: the dollar and time, usually hours. The whole “per year” concept is arbitrary and makes it easy to trick yourself. Let’s look at the real trade. Jane Doe makes $100,000 per year, $2000 for each of the 50 weeks of the year, and works 80 hours a week. Jane Doe thus makes $25 per hour. John Doe makes $50,000 per year, $1000 for each of 50 weeks per year, but works 10 hours per week and hence makes $100 per hour. In relative income, John is four times richer.

Our culture is obsessed with time. It is our personal deficit crisis. We always think we’re saving time, and yet we feel like we never have enough of it. (…) Like airlines, we routinely overbook ourselves, fearful of any unused capacity, confident we can fit everything in. We fear that if we don’t cram as much as possible into our day, we might miss out on being fabulous, important, special, or career advancing. But there are no rollover minutes in life. We don’t get to keep all that time we “save”. It’s actually a very costly way to live.

Now you may be thinking, “This all sounds great, but how can I actually find more free time?”

It may surprise you that you already have more time than you think. Day by day, we feel so time poor, but too often we fail to see the bigger picture – probably because we don’t spend our time mindfully. I’d like to share some time budgeting methods that changed my life.

A simple method from 168 Hours by Laura Vanderkam motivated me to start with a blank slate; to take a step back and look at exactly just how time affluent I already am.

First, we start with 168 hourly slots in a week. Of those, I spend

19.5 hours working (7, 6.5 and 6 hours)
3 hours getting ready for work (1 hour x 3 days)
1.5 hours walking to/from work (15 mins twice x 3 days)
56 hours sleeping (8 hours x 7 days)
2.25 hours showering (approx. 20 mins x 7 days)
3 hours volunteering
0.5 hours driving to/from volunteer work (15 mins each way)

3 hours working out (I run + attend BODYPUMP class 3 times a week)

That leaves me with 79.25 hours per week.

“Well duh,” you say. “You work part-time.”

Even working full-time last year, it would’ve looked like this:

37.5 hours working (7.5 hours x 5 days)
5 hours getting ready for work (1 hour x 5 days)
2.5 hours walking to/from work (15 mins twice x 5 days)
56 hours sleeping
2.25 hours showering
3 hours working out

I would’ve still had a whopping 61.75 hours per week!

Work out your own 168 hours. Rejoice at how much free time you had that you didn’t even realise.

It works like this: after writing your to do list, prioritise and pick out what needs to be done today. Wipe the rest out and move to tomorrow. Repeat.

For example, my to-do list could look like this:

Read book

Pick up candle supplies

Order present 

Buy groceries

And my must-do list would then look like this:

Pick up candle supplies

Buy groceries

See? It’s easy.

Now, how to get the most out of that time.

Be mindful by single tasking. If we have so much free time, where does it all go? We lose it because we spend it mindlessly. 20 minutes of scrolling through social media, 15 minutes of indecisive procrastination, and we lose parts of our day without even realising. Single tasking boosts productivity, increases mindfulness, improves cognitive performance & accuracy, and makes you happier – because by being mindful, you can find deeper focus, feeling more engaged in your work (whether that be paid work or your own work of creativity/art). You’ll free yourself to be fully present and in the moment, increasing feelings of awe, wonder and appreciation.

Meditate. I use the meditation apps Calm and Stop, Breathe & Think, and both are absolutely brilliant. With Calm, the Body Scan was my favourite to de-stress, but I found something surprising: it always made time slow down. Case in point: when I truly, deeply focus on even the 5 minute Body Scan meditation, 5 minutes expands to feel like 20 minutes. I open my eyes and come back to reality feeling like I’ve just taken a long, deep nap and gotten plenty of rest. Incredible to say the least.

Live in alignment. Have you ever stopped to assess if you are living aligned with your values? Nobody says, “I live for money. I live to please my boss/family/friends/anyone but myself. I live to chase goals that aren’t truly sustainable or important.” But so many of us live that way. Busy is not synonymous with productive, or beneficial, or valuable, or meaningful, or purposeful. That’s why I keep my time balanced, and do things I value, like volunteering – even though it’s 3 hours out of my day every week, I still always feel like I have all the time in the world, because it fills me with more energy, happiness and sense of purpose.

So, think about everything you did today, or this week. Now, think about which of those things were genuinely worthwhile. Is there a discrepancy? There you have it!

I hope this has inspired you to appreciate each and every single moment, and to make time for what matters.
